Huehuetl · the Mexica hide drum

How the huehuetl sounds, what it is made of, and why its fundamental is

Huehuetl · membranófono

Sonido sintetizado a partir de grabaciones originales de una réplica, tocada y grabada por el autor.

What it is

A vertical drum, of hollowed trunk, with a deerskin stretched over the top. It stands on three carved legs and is played with the hands, not with sticks: the fingers at the rim give one sound, the palm at the centre another.

The most cited example is the huehuetl of Malinalco, with its reliefs of dancing eagles and jaguars.

What exactly was measured

A replica, played and recorded by the author of this project. Not an archaeological piece, and that changes what the figure means.

A replica is built today, by someone with their own view of what measurements, what wood and what tension the original had. Its timbre is that replica's — not that of the instrument kept in a museum, and still less of one that sounded in Tenochtitlan.

That is why the timbre is declared measured and not attested: the measurement is exact and the object is recent. Two different things, and this project does not mix them.

And one more limit: the timbre is measured, but the pitch it is synthesised at is not. Outside its real range, the sound stops corresponding to the instrument.

What exactly was measured

Synthesised from original recordings. The process was this: a replica of the instrument was played and recorded, and from that take the parameters the engine uses were extracted by analysis.

A replica is built today, by someone with their own view of what measurements and materials the original had. Its timbre is that replica's — not that of a museum piece, and still less of one that sounded in Tenochtitlan.

That is why the timbre is declared measured and not attested: the measurement started from a real object, and that object is recent.

The original takes are not kept. What is published here is the sound the engine produces from them, with its fingerprint so that anyone can check it is the file it claims to be.

Questions that reach this page

What does a huehuetl sound like?

It is an upright drum of hollowed trunk with a hide head, played with the hands. This page carries a sample: ten seconds of a replica, played and recorded, from which the timbre was measured. No Aztec music survives, so what is measured are the instruments, not the melodies.
