Music and instruments

Nobody knows how Mexica music sounded: no notation survived. What survived are the instruments, and they have been measured. Here are six samples, one per instrument, and a three-minute piece made with those timbres.

13ª danza Quiáhuitl, con cuechtli y tlapitzalli · tonal 39

Synthesised from original recordings of replicas, played and recorded by the author. The music is not attested.

Six samples, one per instrument

Each with ten seconds of its isolated sound, its measured frequency and where it comes from. The timbres are measured; the music is not attested, and each page says which is which.

What did Aztec music sound like?

Nobody knows. No Mexica notation survives, so no recording or reconstruction can claim to be authentic Aztec music. What does survive are the instruments, and those have been measured: this section carries six samples, one per instrument, synthesised from recordings of replicas.
