First, because almost nobody says it

Nobody knows how Mexica music sounded. No notation survived, no score, no method. What survived are the instruments: clay flutes, conch shells, drums of wood and of hide, rattles. They can be played, and how they sound has been measured.

So when somebody sells «authentic Aztec music to meditate to», they are selling something that does not exist. What is authentic are the timbres, not the melodies.

This page does not fix that. It says it, and offers the only honest thing there is to offer: a piece made with those measured timbres, built by a procedure anyone can examine.

Why it serves for sleeping, and why we say no more than that

It is slow, faint and without a refrain. It runs three minutes and does not repeat: its eight bars differ from one another, even though the even ones resemble each other and the odd ones likewise.

That is all that can be asserted. We do not say it induces sleep, lowers anxiety or improves rest, because we have not measured it and nobody has measured it for us. It is calm music because its numbers are, not because it was composed to calm.

Where it comes from, with its fingerprint

It was synthesised by the same engine that plays it on the phone, run on a desktop. The files served here carry their published fingerprint: anyone can download them, run sha256sum and check that it matches.

That is not ornament. It is what separates this piece from any audio file with an evocative name.

Questions that reach this page

How did Aztec music sound? It is not known. How its instruments sound is known, because they survive and have been measured. The music was lost with the notation, which never existed in written form.

Is there authentic Mexica music to meditate to? No, if by authentic you mean reconstructed from a source. There are pieces made with documented instruments and timbres, which is a different thing and worth not confusing.

What instruments did the Mexica use? The huehuetl, a vertical drum of deerskin. The teponaztli, of hollow wood with two tongues. The tlapitzalli, a clay flute. The atecocolli and the tecciztli, sea conches. The ayacachtli, a rattle. And the cuechtli, of small shells.

Is Aztec the same as Mexica? Not exactly, and the difference has its own page.

Is the sign of the day a horoscope? No. The tonalpohualli was a divinatory count, but not astrology.
