Cuechtli · the shells worn to walk

An instrument you wear rather than play, and the feasts it appears in

Cuechtli · idiófono vestido

Sonido sintetizado a partir de grabaciones originales de una réplica, tocada y grabada por el autor.

It is worn, not played

This is the difference that sets it apart from all the others. The cuechtli is not held in the hand: it is small shells hung from leather strips, sewn to clothing. They sound because whoever wears them walks.

Sahagún describes it in Book II, speaking of the citlalli icue skirt of Ilamatecuhtli in the veintena of Títitl: when she walked, he says, «hazían gran ruido que se oían lexos» — they made a great noise that was heard from far off.

It appears in four veintenas: Tecuilhuitontli, Teotleco, Títitl and Izcalli.

What exactly was measured

Synthesised from original recordings. The process was this: a replica of the instrument was played and recorded, and from that take the parameters the engine uses were extracted by analysis.

A replica is built today, by someone with their own view of what measurements and materials the original had. Its timbre is that replica's — not that of a museum piece, and still less of one that sounded in Tenochtitlan.

That is why the timbre is declared measured and not attested: the measurement started from a real object, and that object is recent.

The original takes are not kept. What is published here is the sound the engine produces from them, with its fingerprint so that anyone can check it is the file it claims to be.

Questions that reach this page

What is the cuechtli? Small shells hung from leather strips and sewn to clothing. It is not played with the hand: it sounds because whoever wears it walks.

Which Mexica ceremonies used it? Four veintenas: Tecuilhuitontli, Teotleco, Títitl and Izcalli. Sahagún describes the citlalli icue skirt of Ilamatecuhtli, which made a great noise as she walked.

What is the difference between cuechtli and ayacachtli? They are different instruments, not variants. The cuechtli is 46 times sparser, nearly an octave and a half higher, and with a shorter tail: shells that resonate briefly against stones that strike dry.
